How to understand the crisis in Bolivia? The country is gripped by revolts against foreign investments, especially in the natural gas sector, but everything seems so repetitive that we are unable to identify the real reason for so much disagreement within a nation.
Natural gas is environmentally friendly and cheaper
Bolivia has enjoyed relative stability for around 20 years, but it Special Data wasn't always like this. Direct elections only began to be held in 1985 and the partisan divide offers few options for the population. In the economic sphere, it can be said that Bolivians were not prepared for the economic shock of 1985, an attempt to control inflation that reached 24 thousand percent. At the time it was common to hear that this is “short-term pain for long-term gain”. Two decades later, the gains are almost nil.
Some points have improved. The infant mortality rate, for example, has decreased. But the purchasing power of the population is falling. In Latin America, Bolivia is the poorest country, with approximately 30% of people surviving on US$1 a day.
Natural Gas
The reality of poverty makes Bolivians believe that this misery comes from the exploitation of natural reserves by foreign countries. Hence movements demanding the nationalization of gas emerged.
Pipes used to transport natural gas
Natural gas is a mixture of light hydrocarbons. It has no smell or color, is non-toxic and is lighter than air. The preference for using this gas arises amid the need to enjoy a clean energy source, which does not cause harm to nature, replacing more polluting fuels in industries such as fuel oil, firewood and coal. This gas contributes to reducing deforestation and truck traffic that transport fuel oil to industries.
In addition to these advantages, natural gas has a large amount of reserves, which would guarantee the fuel's application in our daily lives for a long period, improving people's quality of life. It is distributed safely through a network of tubes that conduct the gas, and since it is lighter than air, it does not require storage. By using natural gas, the environment will thank you.
